A Bridge Between Cultures: Julian Castellanos, Building a Stronger Local 481

After earning my Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science with a Minor in Agricultural Business,

I have worked at SDZWA for the last 28 years, currently as part of the Zoo’s primate department. 

I have served as the Chief Shop Steward on campus since 2021 in addition to being a Trustee for Local 481. Working with such talented people is a real blessing and being able to work for Local 481 is a true honor. I have had the opportunity to help many zoo employees navigate the sometimes difficult situations they have encountered and I have made a commitment to assist the membership in any way possible. 

Being fluent in Spanish, I have been able to translate tours, presentations and educational classes on multiple occasions in addition to the opportunity to travel to many countries sharing information on animal husbandry and zoo keeping. Also, being able to communicate with my Spanish speaking Union Brothers and Sisters in a language they are most comfortable with, enhances the representation that Local 481 provides the membership.

However the highlight of my career has been helping my Union Brothers and Sisters here at home.

In addition to fulfilling all the responsibilities of a Senior Wildlife Care Specialist, Zoo Chief Shop Steward and Local 481 Officer, I also serve as President of “Rancho Los Granados, SPR de RL”, an agriculture production company located in northern Baja California, Mexico.
